Afrotropical secondary forests exhibit fast diversity and functional recovery, but slow compositional and carbon recovery after shifting cultivation

چکیده
Questions Human disturbance is increasingly affecting forest dynamics across the tropics. Forests can recover via natural secondary succession to pre-disturbance levels of biodiversity, species composition, and ecosystem carbon stocks. Central Africa will be subject high shifting-cultivation pressure in next decades, but trajectories these properties are still poorly known for Congo basin. We addressed two questions: (1) how does taxonomic functional composition diversity shift during succession; (2) fast do above-ground stocks tropical forests? Location Methods conducted an inventory trees (diameter at breast height [DBH] ? 10 cm), measured traits soil texture content 18 plots, located along six stages (i.e., from agricultural old growth sites). tree diameter, 20% distributed diameter classes, wood all species, leaf that contributed 85% plot basal area. Results showed forests relatively terms diversity, alpha fine-root carbon, with near-old-growth values after decades past disturbance, while floristic exhibited slower recovery. Secondary only partially shifted acquisitive a conservative life history, shifts being largely decoupled traits. Only 43% recovered 60 years regrowth, potentially through slow recovery large-sized stems dominate old-growth forests. Conclusions Our findings underline capacity Afrotropical clear-cutting shifting cultivation. Simultaneously, harbor particular community store large quantity much longer trajectories, stressing need conservation

Tropical secondary forests regenerating after shifting cultivation in the Philippines uplands are important carbon sinks
In the tropics, shifting cultivation has long been attributed to large scale forest degradation, and remains a major source of uncertainty in forest carbon accounting. In the Philippines, shifting cultivation, locally known as kaingin, is a major land-use in upland areas. We measured the distribution and recovery of aboveground biomass carbon along a fallow gradient in post-kaingin secondary fo...

متن کاملTropical forests and shifting cultivation: secondary forest fallow dynamics among traditional farmers of the Peruvian Amazon
Tropical secondary forests created by swidden-fallow agriculture cover extensive areas in the humid tropics and yield significant ecological and economic benefits, yet forest fallowing behaviour among swidden cultivators remains poorly understood. This paper reports on a study of forest fallow management among Amazonian peasant farmers in a traditional, riverside community near Iquitos, Peru. D...
متن کاملRecovery and resilience of tropical forests after disturbance
The time taken for forested tropical ecosystems to re-establish post-disturbance is of widespread interest. Yet to date there has been no comparative study across tropical biomes to determine rates of forest re-growth, and how they vary through space and time. Here we present results from a meta-analysis of palaeoecological records that use fossil pollen as a proxy for vegetation change over th...
متن کاملSlow Repetitive Nerve Stimulation in Patients with Acute Organophosphorus Poisoning after Clinical Recovery
Background: Prolonged inhibition of acetylcholine esterase may lead to the intermediate syndrome. Neuromuscular junction (NMJ) dysfunction has been shown with repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS). Subclinical NMJ dysfunction may also occur. We aimed to examine the NMJ function following acute organophosphorus (OP) poisoning by using exercise modified slow RNS. Methods: A cohort study was conducte...
